Our Story

Benne’s opened its doors in August 2022 as a relaxed yet refined extension of the acclaimed Peninsula Grill at Planter’s Inn. Located in the heart of downtown Charleston on Market Street, the space transitions seamlessly from a bright, welcoming café by day to an intimate cocktail lounge by night. Mornings begin with freshly baked pastries and expertly crafted coffee, while afternoons offer elevated café fare. As evening settles in, Benne’s transforms—serving specialty cocktails and indulgent desserts in a warm, social setting.

The name “Benne’s” is inspired by benne seeds, the Lowcountry word for sesame—an ingredient deeply rooted in the region’s culinary history and believed to bring good fortune to those who enjoy it. This thoughtful nod reflects the café’s connection to Charleston’s rich cultural heritage and its commitment to celebrating the flavors and traditions that define the region.

Created to complement the Peninsula Grill, Benne’s is the exclusive home of the restaurant’s legendary Ultimate Coconut Cake — served by the slice and beloved by locals and visitors alike. This iconic dessert, which originated at Peninsula Grill, takes center stage here, offering guests a chance to indulge in one of Charleston’s most celebrated sweets in a more relaxed setting. Pair it with a signature cocktail, like a martini inspired by the famed cake, for the perfect day-to-night treat.

Located on North Market Street beside Peninsula Grill, Benne’s offers a calm escape in the heart of Charleston. Just through the back entrance, guests will find access to the iconic courtyard garden at Planters Inn—an inviting, hidden oasis open throughout the day and evening.
